Kia ora, I’m Poppy Gibson, a journalism student at NZBS with a deep love for sport, a curiosity for people and a passion for storytelling that makes a difference.
Sport has been a constant in my life, whether I was on the field, glued to the screen with Dad during one of his many rugby reruns, or passionately debating score lines. It’s what first drew me to journalism, but what’s kept me here is the power of storytelling. The ability to inform, connect and reflect the world around us.
I spent most of my childhood overseas, mostly in Australia, throwing myself into every sport I could, while picking up a pretty hearty Aussie accent that still creeps in now!
Those years gave me a wider perspective and taught me the importance of connecting with people from all walks of life.
Returning to Aotearoa gave me the opportunity to reconnect with my roots and begin exploring my Māori culture. Something that has now become an important part of my identity and continues to influence the way I approach people and stories.
I’m especially inspired by wāhine like Kirsty Stanway, Kimberlee Downs, and Taylah Johnson — strong voices in the sporting world who’ve shown what it means to lead with confidence and authenticity.
I hope to follow in those footsteps, carving out my own space in journalism with integrity, energy, and a sense of humour.
I look forward to connecting with you!
Ngā mihi nui.
