Keen skiers hoping to hit the slopes this King’s Birthday weekend will be disappointed as Mt Hutt has postponed its season opening.

Mt Hutt Operations Manager James Mckenzie, also known as JMac, took to the Mt Hutt Instagram yesterday to share the update.

“This time three weeks ago I was standing on about a metre of snow right here in the base area of Mt Hutt”.

“As you can see today, it’s all gone”.

An early start to the season had initially generated excitement due to a significant snowfall at the beginning of May. However, the excitement was short-lived as heavy rainfall swept away all the snow.

“That means of course that we won’t be able to get open in time for the King's Birthday weekend”.

“The forecast is suggesting we got some colder weather coming through, with some snow potentially, but right now we just don’t have the confidence it will be here in time”.

JMac acknowledged that there isn't yet enough confidence to promise a reopening date, even if the forecast indicates the possibility of colder weather and more snow.

“At this stage, plans are just put on hold, if we can get open for the 7th and 8th of June, a weekend earlier than our planned original opening, then we will do that”.

“Otherwise we will just revert to our scheduled opening date of 13th of June”.

JMac shared his disappointment, yet maintains hope for the remainder of the season.

“We are gutted, we are very disappointed, I'm sure you are too”.

“I’m pretty confident our fortunes will change and we will be back into skiing and riding at Mt Hutt very soon”.

Keen Mt Hutt goers took to the Instagram comments to share how they felt about the news.

“We understand but this feeling is worse than a break up…”

“Thanks for having a go at it. No one is more disappointed than you guys I’m sure”.

“I'm planning to visit end of June. Cmon snow!!”.
