Kia Ora
I’m Mikayla, a second year student journalist here at the New Zealand Broadcasting School. Ever since I was a kid I’d always loved broadcast media. Both radio and television were a big part of my childhood, especially on a Sunday morning when my favourite show “What Now?” was on.
Growing up in Leeston, a small rural town south of Christchurch, I was limited on what was on offer to me. I found my love for reading and writing at school and absolutely thrived at speech competitions. I immersed myself in netball and found a real passion for not just playing the sport, but coaching it too.
I always knew that I wanted to be part of the media world, but didn’t quite know how I fit into it. After finding out university wasn’t for me, I decided to put together my skills and apply to the Broadcasting School, and I am so glad I did!
Now I find myself surrounded in a world of news and I love it! I have discovered a new passion of chatting to a range of different people, and telling their stories. The hands-on experience that the NZBS gives students is what has really helped me put my skills into practice. I’ve already had the opportunity to chat to some incredible people and even be on live broadcast on our student radio station.
I’m thrilled to be starting my journey in such a fantastic, changing industry and could not be more excited for what the future holds.
