BREAKING NEWS!!
We’re coming to you live where I (Rebecca King) have officially rejected saying “Hi, I’m Rebecca” as an opening line and am now at large in pursuit of something more interesting. Known for rewriting first impressions and chasing a good story, I treat introductions like rough drafts, if it doesn’t land, it doesn’t stay.
Originally from the Wairarapa, where the sheep outnumber the people and everyone knows everyone (and their dog), I grew up surrounded by good yarns, which probably explains the journalism career. These days I’m based in Ōtautahi, studying at the New Zealand Broadcasting School and chasing the dream I’ve had since I was young, inspired by Kiwi broadcasting legends Hilary Barry and Mike McRoberts.
Prior to this, I completed a Bachelor of Communication at Massey University in Wellington and worked as a journalist at the Wairarapa Times-Age, where I learnt how to chase stories, survive tight deadlines, and confidently knock on strangers’ doors pretending I wasn’t nervous. I survived on instant coffee and against my will, accumulated a concerning amount of wool knowledge for someone under 30.
I then headed off on my OE, which somehow turned into a personal challenge to visit more countries than I have fingers and toes. After two long British winters (and a developing vitamin D deficiency), I figured it was time to come home for some Kiwi sun.
Now back in the classroom (with a pretty little student loan in tow), I’m sharpening my skills, asking lots of questions and calling it a career path, which doesn’t sound too shabby to me. Whether it’s medical breakthroughs, climate change, sustainability, sport or culture, I’m always keen to chase stories that matter and make them interesting to read or watch.
Outside of journalism, you’ll find me behind a camera, competing with my flatmates at Bananagrams, attempting to recreate the best Sri Lankan curry I’ve ever had and unable to resist a bad dad joke.
That’s the latest update from me.
