BREAKING NEWS!!

We’re coming to you live where I (Rebecca King) have officially rejected saying “Hi, I’m Rebecca” as an opening line and am now at large in pursuit of something more interesting…

Originally from the Wairarapa, where the sheep outnumber the people and everyone knows everyone (and their dog), I grew up surrounded by good yarns, which probably explains the journalism career. Growing up, I bounced between wanting to be a journalist, National Geographic photographer, or the voice of Meerkat Manor, which is just a long way of saying I wanted a job telling stories about the world, with animals as a bonus.

After completing a Bachelor of Communication at Massey University in Wellington, I then went on to work as a journalist at the Wairarapa Times-Age. I learnt how to chase stories, survive tight deadlines, and confidently knock on strangers’ doors pretending I wasn’t nervous. I survived on instant coffee and against my will, accumulated a concerning amount of wool knowledge for someone under 30.

I then headed off on my OE, which turned into a personal challenge to visit more countries than I have fingers and toes. After two long British winters and a developing vitamin D deficiency, I figured it was time to come home for some Kiwi sun.

Now back in the classroom – with a pretty little student loan in tow – I’m sharpening my skills, asking lots of questions and calling it a career path, which doesn’t sound too shabby to me.

I love learning languages, with Japanese and Portuguese both still in progress. For me, it connects back to journalism in the same way, it’s about curiosity, listening closely, and understanding people. At the heart of it all, the reason I got into journalism is simple – I’m interested in people and their stories. I believe good journalism can shine a light on experiences that might otherwise go unnoticed. If a story can help someone feel heard, challenge the status quo, or make a genuine difference in someone’s life, then I’ve done what I set out to do.

Outside of journalism, you’ll find me behind a camera, competing with my flatmates at Monopoly Deal, attempting to recreate the best Sri Lankan curry I’ve ever had and unable to resist a bad dad joke.

That’s the latest from me.

Ngā mihi.
