Kia ora e hoa!
I'm Madaleine Mansfield, a student journalist here at NZBS, and I'm passionate about all things sport. Don't be fooled though - I am interested in all aspects of news and can turn a general story around when required - sports is just my jam.
Growing up, I was always watching, playing or talking about sport. I've played netball, basketball and touch rugby at a representative level, but due to injuries I've taken a step back from playing. It's been a hard transition but one that ignited a new passion and enabled me to be involved in a different capacity.
Originally from Oamaru, I ventured to Dunedin in 2021 to study communications thinking that was my pathway. As graduation loomed, I felt that sports broadcasting was calling me so I decided to apply for NZBS and never looked back!
Life is too short to stay worrying about the "what ifs" and what's another 2 years of study anyways? (Cries in 5 years worth of student loan) Jokes aside, being a little bit older has given me a unique perspective and mature approach to my stories which has been invaluable in the beginning of my journey as a journalist.
I love the practical side of learning here at NZBS. So far, I have been able to commentate at the Tupu League Basketball Nationals in 2024 and interview at the Tactix, Rams, Crusaders and Matatū trainings. I look forward to gaining more experience throughout the rest of my time here and beyond.
