Despite what most people outside New Zealand think, I'm not a sheep.

Yes I do enjoy a good frolic in a field, but no I don’t love blindly following a herd.

When getting to the bottom of a story, asking questions and delving into discussions are my most valued tools. I'm bold, curious, and objective - my news reporting is the same.

你好! I'm Adriana Tobin, a student journalist with the New Zealand Broadcasting School.

Originally from Tāmaki Makaurau I moved down to chilly Ōtautahi to give journalism a go. I come from a bi-cultural background with my mum being Chinese and my dad kiwi. This has given me the innate ability to see the world through multiple lenses, and being able to speak fluent Cantonese has been a good connection point.

I’ve always been interested in writing and people so I thought why not combine the two and do news! So far I’ve learn’t how to write under high stress, how to find the key angle, and how to badger people on the phone. All important skills which I’ve transferred to some of my other endeavors. This year I have been given the opportunity to be part of the Special Olympics student journalist team. I am currently publishing lead up stories but am incredibly excited to cover the National Games in December! I am also in my second year of writing for the ARA student magazine, Waha Kōrero.

Sports is my thing and so is environment and sustainability, but anything news and I’m in. Community and people centred stories especially interest me, because you never know what unique tale you’ll uncover. I aim to continue expanding my skill set and challenging my boundaries in the name of accurate and reliable news reporting. I’m excited to see what the future holds and what fields I will frolic in.

Ngā mihi.
