Jason Micheal Walker has been sentenced to 22 and a half months imprisonment after he was convicted of forcing the child to perform and receive oral sex with him.
Walker was arrested on the night of the crime.
He appeared for sentencing via audio-visual link from Westport before Judge Steven O'Driscoll in the Christchurch District Court on August 5.
The family of the victim had to return to court after Walker failed to turn up when scheduled earlier in the day. They were tearful in the public gallery of the court.
Walker said he could not remember the night in question because he was grossly intoxicated. He said he remembered waking up in a police cell.
Defence counsel Douglas Taffs said his client was extremely remorseful.
The Judge deemed Walker to be at high risk of harm and re-offending, and ordered him to complete a psychological assessment, as well well as undergo drug and alcohol counselling as part of his sentencing.
