10 cases of VRE are currently in a Christchurch ward.

Christchurch Hospital is facing an outbreak of the superbug vancomycin-resistant enterococci (or VRE).

VRE causes high temperatures, chills and aches and is hard to treat due to resistance to some antibiotics.

10 patients at Christchurch Hospital are carriers of the bug - and have been confined to one of the hospitals' wings.

Health New Zealand says preventative deep cleaning and use of PPE are in place.

They're providing information to patients and their families and answering their concerns.

The outbreak has been linked to a larger cluster in Auckland.
