Prices are set to rise at Christchurch's council-run recreation and sport facilities.
The Christchurch City Council announced this week that some services at its recreation and sport facilities are set for a price increase on October 1.
However, there is a five per cent increase in discounts for Community Service cardholders, SuperGold, Hāpai and secondary student cardholders from 25 per cent to 30 per cent.
For everyone else, casual products, multi-visit passes, recreation programme fees, southern centre fees, Ngā Puna wai fees, camping ground fees, and memberships (except Swimsmart) will increase.
Gym and pool memberships will rise by $1 per week, or $49 per year. Adult casual swim passes will increase from $6.70 to $7, with child passes rising from $3.80 to $4.
Court hire, preschool gymnastics and Swimsmart fees will increase from January 5.
The council said fees will not be increasing for swim lanes, room hire and birthday packages.
Council head of recreation, sports and events Nigel Cox said despite inflation, it was the first significant fee increase in two years.
The council's annual plan process included gathering feedback on the price increase.
Cox said there was around an even split of those opposed, and those who were supportive.
Cox said the goal was to boost the number of repeat customers, which in turn would generate more revenue.
The price increase was one way they were managing the balance of cost from ratepayers and user fees. Currently, 70 per cent of operating costs were paid for by general rates and 30 per cent were paid for by user charged fees.
When the new Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre opened, the entry fees and memberships will be the updated October fees.
Cox was anticipating an increase in memberships once the network of recreation and sport facilities were complete in Christchurch.
