Christchurch hosts record breaking BBQ event

Hester Lukey

Christchurch just celebrated good kai and community spirit as it hosted Smoke in the Park, a barbecue competition that drew pitmasters from across the globe.

Held at the Christchurch A&P Showgrounds, the event made history with New Zealand’s first ever Rib Cookoff. With 53 entries, the competition became the third largest rib cookoff event in the world.

A couple hundred BBQ enthusiasts gathered to spectate, support, and of course, sample meat.

In addition to the main event, Smoke in the Park provided live fire cooking demos, where seasoned chefs showcased their skills and shared tips with eager spectators.

However, the real heat was at the judging table, where competitors were judged on taste, texture, and appearance.

Among the competitors was Troy Bilbrough, founder of Bacon Bros and a competitive pitmaster. For him, the event was more than just a competition.

“We are one big community who really looks after each other. It’s men and women but mostly men, it’s really good for men’s mental health,” shared Troy.

All the way from Texas, Phil and Carmen from Texas LC BBQ shared that the community spirit of BBQ knows no borders.

“It’s a lot like this, it doesn’t matter where you go in the world, you get a bunch of people smiling, cooking meat, and drinking beer.”

Another international team was She BBQ, an all female group from the U.S.

We borrowed everything. Everyone is so willing to share. It’s a similar community in the US. BBQ community is truly a family,” said team member Jodie.

The event does not have any restrictions on age with the youngest competitor, Kelly, being just nine years old, having celebrated her birthday only two weeks prior. She competed in the competition with her mum there to supervise.

“Not many other girls my age do it but it’s really fun,” Kelly shared.

While many awards were handed out, a standout was proclaimed local legend Rangi Te Amo, winning the rib cookoff. His victory not only earned him the $1000 cash prize but also secured him a spot at the World Championship in Oklahoma, USA next year.
