The famous yellow and blue building will be opening on December 4th in Auckland's Sylvia Park, right in time for the Christmas shopping boom.
Out-of-towners can only buy IKEA products online on launch day. The companies established a network of 29 pick-up points, operated by Mainfreight. They’ll be Christchurch, Wellington, Dunedin, Kaitaia, Greymouth and Invercargill.
The 34,000 m² store will be jam-packed with 7500 products, including the trademark flatpack furniture sets, fully styled kitchens and bedrooms, as well as a 426-seat Swedish restaurant. Additionally, a bistro and a Swedish food market will be available.
IKEA fan Alister from Christchurch is excited for the food offerings.
“I can’t wait to try those meatballs. I’ve been waiting to sample them."
Potential buyers have the opportunity to see what's on offer when the store opens at the pop-up. It combines the IKEA products with art produced by local artists, including Ghostcat, Miranda Parkes, Adam Popovic and Kophie Su’a-Hulsbosch.
One item on display is a Svartpoppel, or a 50x50 cm light green cushion cover, listed at $9.99. The first item on display near the entrance is a red table lamp called a Blåsverk.
A pop-up is also opening in Wellington from November 28th to December 17th
