Film rebate changes announced today could entice more international film crews to New Zealand.
The announcement, made by Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis, includes lowering the minimum spend from $15 to $4 million to qualify for the rebate.
Willis says, “These changes ensure New Zealand remains a serious contender in an increasingly competitive global screen industry.
“The move will provide steady work for Kiwis and strengthen relationships in growing film industries in Asia and the Midde East."
She says the move is important in an ever-changing industry.
"By staying agile and globally connected, we can turn Kiwi creativity into competitive advantage — keeping New Zealand on the world stage and growing one of our most distinctive export industries.”
Currently the screen sector contributes $3.5 billion a year to the GDP and supports 24,000 jobs.
Head of International Attraction at the New Zealand Film Commission, Phillippa Mossman says the change will keep the ball rolling after several big productions this year.
"Productions like Avatar: Fire and Ash, Minecraft Movie, Disney's Zombies, Megan and Megan Two, Spartacus, Chief of War, Predator lands us in cinemas this week. Those to name a few."
She says it will provide opportunities outside of the film industry, and high quality jobs for New Zealanders.
