Woman dies in Christchurch police custody

A woman has died while in police custody this morning in Christchurch.

A woman has died while in police custody this morning in Christchurch.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill says police found the woman unresponsive in her cell at 6.50am.

“Police immediately notified St John, officers also provided medical assistance. Sadly, attempts to revive the woman were unsuccessful,” Hill said.

Enquiries are being made into the circumstances of the death.

The death will be referred to the Coroner, as well as the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
