Lily McCurrie

I’ve always loved a good story, especially the one that keeps you awake at night.

Kia ora,

My name is Lily McCurrie, and I was born and raised in Ōtautahi. My iwi are Ngāti Pūkenga and Ngāti Pāoa.

From a young age, I’ve loved reading, writing, and talking, sometimes a bit too much.

I’ve always been fascinated by true crime, and even after scaring myself half to death with documentaries, I could never look away. Court reporting has been my absolute favourite experience so far at Broadcasting School. Sitting in on a murder trial was both surreal and fascinating. It made me realise the kind of journalism I want to pursue: holding people to account while giving a voice to victims and their families.

Being told I have the “perfect” voice for crime reporting has been one of the biggest compliments I’ve received so far in my journalism journey, and it reassured me that I’m on the right path.

As a child, I loved creating and starring in my own videos, quickly filling up the storage on not only my iPad but also my parents’ phones. That creativity ultimately led me to journalism, where I could turn my passion for storytelling into a career.

This year, I’ve had the privilege of being the P2 voice of The Sauce 96.1 FM, an exciting opportunity to work with a station that resonates with me and to develop my radio skills further. Hearing my voice on air never gets old.

After almost two years at NZBS, I’ve discovered a passion for sharing local stories and giving a voice to those who often go unheard.

I especially enjoy investigative, broadcast, and radio journalism, working both in front of and behind the camera.

I’m looking forward to growing my skills as a journalist, asking too many questions, and being in front of the camera where I feel at home.

Ngā mihi.
