DayDream#184 - Writer, Sound Recordist, and Editor

Tom Cuthbert

Drama/Short Film

For our Drama module at the beginning of year I had the role of Writer, Sound Recordist, and Editor. I also worked alongside the Director in Colour Grading.

Along with the Director Angelo Sales, we established a theme, direction and overall plot before I worked with Louise Leitch as script advisor to narrow down on a script that ticked all the boxes. We also worked closely together along with the cinematographer to conceptualize a well developed and followed storyboard, meaning we were able to effectively execute visual effects that supported the story.

With the story parameters fairly defined, I enjoyed writing a script to constraints imposed by the Director and script supervisor. I had the opportunity to add my own flare in the film, but looking back now there are definitely things I would change or do better. One thing is the use of music, I would be less heavy-handed and try and work in moments that made audial transitions seamless. I would also work on narrowing down acts in the script to their bare essentials, as I felt some parts were out of proportion to others.

Working tightly as a team gave us the opportunity to conceptualize and execute techniques from start to finish that created intense moments in the film, contrasting with lulls in the story and moments of calm.

What I developed most during my Editing time on this short film was sound design. It gave me the experience needed to truly appreciate how crucial solid sound design is to immersing the audience in the film, and I creating a convincing world and setting.
