Report recommends against Summit Rd restrictions

The City Council will be presented with a recommendation against banning cars from the Summit Rd at night.

Over 800 public submissions were made on the proposal that would see car access restricted on the road between 10pm and 5am on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

The proposal was made to stop boyracers and protect the isolated and ecologically sensitive area from vandalism.

However, a panel headed by Councillor David East has looked at all the submissions and their recommendation, which is against closing the road, will go to council on Thursday.

Summit Road Protection Society Vice President Jeremy Agar says they do not want to see cars banned, a better approach would be making the area more like a park with a recreational and conservation focus.
