Snowed in at Tongariro National Park

Residents and holiday makers are stuck in the Tongariro National Park

New Zealand is experiencing such severe weather conditions right now that residents of Tongariro National Park have never seen anything on this scale.

Local business owner Carleen Furner said in 30 years of living in National Park, this was the first time she had seen a snow fall like this.

Whilst there is always snow through winter on Mt Ruapehu, the National Park village in the Ruapehu district has been hit by an unprecedented depth of snow.
