A policy has been passed for Selwyn bars and clubs to close at 2am in hopes help to lower alcohol-related crimes.

The local alcohol policy was passed last Wednesday, but not everyone thinks it's going to help prevent violent crime.

Selwyn District Councillor Craig Watson said there was no evidence that alcohol encouraged rape and abuse. Those decisions came down to character.

Watson said the policy was a fair compromise for people, who wanted to go out and have fun, and those who were concerned about the community.

The policy will come into effect on April 24.
