A young family from Temuka is preparing to put everyday life on hold for a once-in-a-lifetime, six-month adventure.
On Monday, the Salisbury family leave everything behind for what might be their biggest challenge yet, the Te Araroa Trail.
The family of five is walking the 3000-kilometre trail with their 79-year-old aunt Clare.
They will also be assisted by Melinda's mother, Hilary, who is following alongside them in a campervan.
After planning logistics and moving homes twice to ensure they could earn income during the hike, Melinda said she was really looking forward to getting out there and focusing on the basics.
A suggestion was also raised to 11-year-old Ollie to use the walk as a way to give back.
A Givealittle page has been started to raise money for Temuka's Wallingford Rest Home and has had over 30 generous donors within the first 14 days.
Ollie said on the Givealittle page, “I want every step to make a difference for the people who have given so much to our community".
“We are blown away," Melinda said.
“People have been so kind and generous."
She said she has always had a thing for travelling the length of the country.
After initially thinking of biking it, she realised she's not a fan of pedaling and considered other options.
Later taking inspiration from another family, the idea came and the planning started.
“Mentally, I think it will be a big challenge for everyone.
“But there are days at home that are hard as well.”
The Salisbury family will begin the Te Araroa trail on September 19.
