Canterbury bus service Metro recommends social distancing and masks on buses.

Environment Canterbury (ECan) public transport manager Stewart Gibbon said bus users sit in window seats where possible and record their travel.

Wearing a mask was advised, especially in situations where physical distancing could be difficult, he said.

"We're working to implement the Alert Level 2 restrictions for public transport, but for today, we're focusing on ensuring we can get people home from school and work."

Gibbon said people should avoid travelling at peak times of 7-9am and 2.30-5.30pm on weekdays.

The Bus Interchange remains open.
