Police have confirmed nobody will be charged in relation to the dog attack that took the life of a one-year-old boy in Christchurch.
Sonny-Charles Watson died after succumbing to injuries from dog bites near his Aranui home on August 14.
The Christchurch City Council previously said the dog involved was registered and there had been no prior reason for council to visit the property.
Greg Watson and Jordan Doherty paid tribute to their son on social media following the tragedy.
“Sonny was not just the light of our lives but everyone he came in contact with,” they wrote.
“Feel free to send messages of love but we will not be responding until the time is right.”
A close friend of the family set up a Givealittle page following the incident, which has now raised over $55,000.
“We have created this page to help ease some of the financial pressure on Greg and Jordan during this devastating time,” said the person who set up the page.
The funds raised will go directly to the couple, allowing them to process their loss without worrying about the associated costs.
Police say Sonny’s death has now been referred to the Coroner.
