A march in support of Ukrainian rights was held in Christchurch over the weekend with the aim of spreading awareness of the crisis.

Ukrainians and Kiwis in Christchurch banded together to spread awareness, with a very clear message. "Help Ukraine, stop Putin."

This comes after Russian military forces invaded Ukraine last week, as well as bombing the country's capital, Kyiv.

The march was organised by the Ukrainian Association of New Zealand. It started in Cathedral Square and was led through the CBD by Liza Khorozova.

Liza was born in Kyiv and immigrated to New Zealand as a one-year-old. However, she still has family members in Ukraine, witnessing the tragedy firsthand.

"My grandparents are in the capital right now. They're sending me videos of bombs exploding and fragments flying everywhere."

She hopes the march will spread awareness and educate people on the conflict.

"I urge all government officials or politicians to do more because sanctions aren't enough, we need to stop Putin, we need to end this now."
