The Canterbury Astronomical Society is concerned about increased industrial lighting and a wasteful use of lighting in residential homes.

Society Committee Member Simon Lewis said light pollution was reducing the "wow" factor of star gazing.

Lewis said the society was "promoting the use of LED lighting and reflective covers to reduce light pollution."

Reflective covers were designed to go on residential and industrial lights to direct the light towards the ground, not the sky.

Lewis said he hoped more people would start working to reduce light pollution.
