Road alignment and traffic lights to improve safety at busy Cracroft intersection.

The intersection of Cashmere Rd, Hoon Hay Rd and Worsleys Rd is getting traffic and pedestrian lights.

The work, which also involves aligning Worsleys Rdand Hoon Hay Rd, starts this month.

The Christchurch City Council first announced plans for the intersection upgrade in 2016 after the Christchurch Adventure Park opened and increased traffic in the area.

The development of the Cashmere Estate subdivision is expected to bring more traffic.

The intersection has been problematic for years. The issue was in the agenda for the first Cracroft Residents' Association meeting in 1999.

The association's  former secretary, Rick Bolce, said that it was difficult to turn right into either Hoon Hay Rd and Worsleys Rd, because you ended up in the same spot on Cashmere Rd as someone turning right from the opposite direction.

Aligning the two roads would rectify that issue.

"I hope it improves it from a safety point of view," Bolce said.

Cracroft resident John Good said there had been "so many near misses" at the intersection.

Velo Passion Project Bike Store owner, Richard Maddock, said he was looking forward to the upgrade and hoped it would improve traffic flow and safety in the morning and evening.

A city council media release stated the upgrade would be complete by late August.
