The property formally known as Marys Mount Rest Home has sold at auction today.

The historic home is tucked away on Worsley’s Road in Cashmere. The property was originally built as a retreat for the nursing sisters of the Catholic sisterhood, The Little Company of Mary. Opened by the second catholic bishop of Christchurch, Bishop Brodie in 1927.

The property which is 500m above sea level is about a third of the size of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens (10.76 ha). Among the many amenities such as five bedrooms, three-car garage, study rooms, tennis court and butler’s pantry. The property also includes a chapel and vestry.

After last being on the market for 37 years ago. The auction opened at $1 million and quickly rose to and was passed in at $2.45 million through the contention of three bidders, after a brief negotiation with the vendor and buyers who were on the phone with listing agent Chris Mangels. The property returned to the auction floor at $2.7 million and was promptly sold.
