Christchurch is in for a cool, foggy start this morning with sunny skies expected mid afternoon.

Light winds will clear low cloud and reveal a mild 15 degrees.

Winter coats will be needed this evening as temperatures are expected to drop to a chilly 3 degrees overnight.

The sun will set at 5.09pm.

In traffic, commuters travelling north on Anzac Dr can expect delays due road works at the roundabout.

Northbound traffic wishing to access Frosts Rd have been urged to take a right onto Travis Rd, left onto Bower Avenue, then left onto Beach Road.

Traffic was backed up on SH 74 Queen Elizabeth II Dr and SH 76 Selwyn St before 8am, causing delays.
