Germon said the chance to manage a team playing in one of the biggest global sporting events in the world was too good to turn down.
"It's the ability to be part of a larger professional sporting franchise that has an opportunity to become a much loved club within the Sydney region," he said.
He said his family would stay in Christchurch for the remainder of the year, but look to move over at the beginning of next year.
Germon's contract with Canterbury Cricket ends in June.
