Free English Lessons Are Here to Stay!

Christchurch's Oxford Terrace Baptist Church has held weekly free English lessons for a year now, and they don't show signs of stopping.

International Pastor of the Church, Jane Con Ye, says the idea came to her in a dream almost seven years before the first class.

“I saw hundreds of people coming into this building looking for help, for what? For an English class.

What they lacked seven years ago was resources and an equip community that was willing to support Jane’s dream. So, the dream was put on pause until 2024.

Early last year, Jane met a Kiwi missionary and English teacher of 20 years who was just as eager to give Ōtautahi’s migrant community the support it lacked.

But with a bit of Facebook advertisement, a few dedicated volunteers and copious amounts of mahi, these free English classes have become a church staple a year after the launch.

Within the sessions, the teacher divvies the groups into language comprehension. The learning difficulties range from beginner to advanced. A special bible lesson taught in basic English is a recent addition to the curriculum.

Beginner English teacher, Abigail Fairbairn, says their focus on conversation and listening comprehension is what separates their classes from the rest.

“I try and make it very practical based. And I try to not worry as much about on accents. Just try and make it: can I understand them; can they understand me? Perfect, that’s what we’re going for, that’s our goal.”

On average, these lessons bring in around 100 people per week. Despite the large numbers, Jane attributes its longevity to the volunteer teachers and church members.

Long time student Jose Donojo says while the massive “FREE” sign might attract people, the casual and conversational atmosphere of the classes is what makes people stay.

“The best part of this class is to talk. I try to keep coming for my family to have the same opportunity to express, to learn, to communicate ideas."

With consistent positive feedback, a general demand for classes, and a returning client base, the Oxford Terrace Baptist Church is constantly adapting and improving their lessons. They have high hopes of running it for years to come.
