Fire before New Brighton Guy Fawkes celebrations

The New Brighton fireworks display began with a fire when the dunes on the southern pier were set alight.

Police are searching for those responsible for a fire at New Brighton beach ahead of tonight’s Guy Fawkes celebrations.

The fire was lit around 6pm Thursday night  in the dunes just south of the New Brighton town centre.

A witness said he saw two males in blue bandanas run from the scene towards the town centre.

The fire is under control and roads have now opened.

The fireworks display off the New Brighton pier starts at 9.10pm.
