Big changes at the E-Can table

Environment Canterbury election results have been released.  Belle Jackson, NZBS

There will be plenty of new faces around the Environment Canterbury table this term, with six new councillors elected.

Environment Canterbury chairperson Craig Pauling announced in July he would not be running again.

 

North Canterbury/Ōpukepuke  

Claire Mckay was re-elected with 10,778 votes alongside new councilor John Faulkner who received 8,845 votes. 

Christchurch West/Ōpuna  

Deon Swiggs will be standing again after receiving 13,457 votes with new councillor Sara Gerard who received 13,041. 

Mid-Canterbury/Ōpakihi Regional 

Ian Mackenzie and John Sunckell are both returning councillors with Mackenzie receiving 16,250 votes and Sunckell with 13,849. 

South Canterbury/Ōtuhituhi  

Nick Ward will be returning to the council after receiving 12,300 votes. 

Peter Scott, a previous E-Can chairperson will be returning on the council with 8,403 votes. Scott said he is “relieved and happy as he looks forward to returning to the councilScott thanked those who voted for him, hoping that him being a local was one of the reasons he got in. He also criticised the low voter turnout, calling it "disturbing".

Turnout for the ward was 43.8%, down from 49.77% at the last election. 

Christchurch North East/Ōrei 

New councilor, Ashley Campbell received 10,177 votes with Joe Davies who was re-elected with 9,881 votes. 

Christchurch Central/Ōhoko  

Genevieve Robinson has been re-elected with new councillor Nettles Lamont for Christchurch Council. Robinson received 7,500 votes with Lamont receiving 7,409 votes. 

Christchurch South/Ōwhanga  

Andrea Davis and Nick Moody are both new councillors. Davis received 12,953 votes with Moody receiving 9,795. 

 

Ngāi Tahu Representatives 

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu have appointed two Ngai Tahu councillors on the Environment Canterbury Board. Iaean Cranwell has been re-appointed to the role, with new appointee Megan McKay. 

Tutehounuku ‘Nuk’ Korako was not re-appointed to the role. 

The chairperson and deputy chair of Environment Canterbury will be chosen at the inaugural meeting. 

Voting closed at 12pm today. 

Votes received today will be counted and released tomorrow. 

Final results including special votes are expected to be released on Thursday October 1
