Trade Aid is selling more compostable chocolate products, following the lockdown.

The non-profit, environmentally friendly store in Colombo St has been using Econic compostable wrappers for its chocolate products since 2014.

The packaging breaks down into small fragments in as little as 16 weeks. Trade Aid employee Nikki Barnes said the chocolate sale increase was encouraging.

"Supporting something that supports others is more important to people now," she said.

The chocolate products are produced here in Christchurch, while the cocoa beans and other materials are sourced from overseas, which supports countries such as Cambodia, India and Peru.

Trade Aid also sells products such as baskets weaved from recycled fabrics sourced from India.

Volunteer worker Jo Rendall said Trade Aid was a "win-win" organisation.

"People love chocolate but supporting other cultural groups and encouraging sustainability is just another part of our story."
