Community spirit keeps post shop alive

Run by volunteers, the Stanmore Road post shop is one of the only stand-alone post shops in New Zealand.

New Zealand Post's plan was to close all shops and merge with other businesses, like banks and bookstores.

But Janine Carney, post shop manager, says the team are quite proud the volunteer power has kept the doors open.

"People frequent the post shop because they want it to stay, a lot of elderly people come in and they're so thankful that we're here."

A lot has changed over the years in Linwood, particularly after the earthquakes where 60% of businesses were shut. However, the post shop has had a consistent presence serving it's diverse community.

Te Whare Roimata is the organisation that oversees the operation of the post shop, it's focus is on bringing life back to eastern inner-city communities.
