A care unit in Village Palms Retirement Village has gone into lockdown after several residents began displaying a respiratory illness.

The retirement village located in Shirley advised residents and family members of the lockdown on Tuesday.

Several residents on a first-floor care unit have been displaying influenza-type symptoms, similar to the symptoms of Coronavirus.

The village has taken Covid-19 swabs of residents and sent those for testing.

The asymptomatic residents are being isolated to avoid further infection

As a safety measure, the facility, not including the apartments, has been placed into lockdown.

Village Palms is not allowing visitors in the meantime.

They want to reiterate that they are following standard protocols for infection control.

With no community transmission in New Zealand in over 100 days, the likelihood of the illness being Coronavirus is very small.

However, with Covid-19 continuing to run rampant in countries all over the world, the village cannot take risks.
