A local market run and organised by kids starts off their third year with a bang!

Every month for the past two years, the Christchurch kids market sets up shop in Mt Pleasant Community centre. The doors have now officially opened for 2025.

The market was created and organised by brother and sister duo, Skye and Sonny.

Skye tells Metronews the idea spawned when she realised how difficult it was for kids to get involved in general markets in Ōtautahi.

“[At] other markets it might be like $20/30 just to have a stall, but I might not be able to make that money back.

She says having a space that allows kids to experience creating and selling their own things is important, and having engaged parents always helps.

The types of stalls they have at each market is on a constant rotation, with applications open to the community for kids to apply.

Mt Pleasant Community Centre was chosen as the venue for its existing experience with markets. It already hosts notable events such as the Food Truck Alley, Farmers Market, and the Arts and Crafts market.

Skye says that while the Mt Pleasant Community Centre has been accommodating, the kids market hopes to expand to new venues to bring in a fresh demographic.

"Just so we can get a new group of people coming in, and more people finding out about us and having a go."

Both Skye and Sonny are supported through the market and on social media by their mother Jo.

Jo says for the moment, she will take the brunt of the online marketing. But with Skye and Sonny getting older, she’s happy to start transitioning full control of the market over to her kids.

With a passion of working with children and the support of a community, Skye and Sonny have big hopes of continuing the market.
