Many may not know that Ōtautahi is the home to a wide array of talented and quirky comedians.

The hub of Christchurch Comedy is Good Times down Saint Asaph Street, where a variety of acts and events are happening every week.

Last night was open mic night, a free event and a chance for new and experienced comedians to try out their acts.

Founder of Good times and Comedian 'Snap presented by Rusewebsites' (long story), has nurtured the growing comedy scene in Christchurch for some years now.

He said that Ōtautahi has a diverse and growing comedy scene.

“We have a good range of comics, a good range of styles and a good range of things spoken about.”

Snap expressed some of the difficulties that comedy does face in Ōtautahi with travel costs for comedians to come here and the small population of the city.

With an upcoming tour around the country and tv special called ‘Welcome to the world of tomorrow’, Snap will be performing back in his hometown of Ōtautahi on June 16th.

Joanna Prendagast otherwise known as Jo Ghastly, is a psychiatrist and now a seasoned comic beginning her career at 48 years old.

Coming into the comedy scene she found Ōtautahi as a welcoming and inclusive environment to start her comedic career, with plenty of opportunity to get involved.

“It’s a place that’s really welcoming to new comedians and gives them a chance to perform.”

Joanna is now a regular at Good Times and is involved in heaps of events at the club.

You can go see Jo Ghastly this Saturday at the club for Big Laughs Pro Comedy Night.
