Screams heard as car mounts footpath, hits pedestrians

Two pedestrians have been hurt, one is in a critical condition, after being hit by a car at the intersection of Fitzgerald Ave and Gloucester St.

A witness said they heard screams as a car mounted a pedestrian island and hit two pedestrians.

The car was travelling towards the city on Gloucester St, crossing Fitzgerald Ave, when the crash happened about 9am.

St John Ambulance spokesman Gerard Campbell said a woman had been taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Two other people were treated at the scene for moderate and minor injuries.

A police spokesperson said the woman was a pedestrian. She was hit by a car at the intersection of Fitzgerald Ave and Gloucester St just before 9am.

Eight police cars were at the scene.

Fitzgerald Ave is closed between Hereford St and Kilmore St.

All side streets approaching Fitzgerald Ave along the closed area are also closed. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.

A detour route is in place for traffic headed north and south.

UPDATE: 

Fitzgerald Ave is now open both north and south bound.

The traffic lights at the Gloucester street intersection are still not functioning, so give way rules must be adhered to.
