Bruce the disabled Alpine Kea has become an unexpected ambassador for Kea conservation around Aotearoa.

After arriving at Ōtautahi's Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in 2013, Bruce the Kea quickly climbed his way to the top of the flock.

Missing half a beak, he surprised everyone by gaining the alpha male status, becoming the first disabled animal to reach the top of its social hierarchy.

Because of this, Bruce gained international attention, putting the spotlight on Kea conservation in Aotearoa.
