Agency houses 20 homeless people

Steven Walton

A re-homing programme involving private landlords has housed 20 homeless people since May.

Housing First puts regular people at the heart of solving homelessness in Christchurch.

Programme leader Nicola Fleming said the agency worked with private landlords to house homeless people in Christchurch.

Fleming said quality housing was difficult to find in Christchurch.

"People just think the homeless can live anywhere. No, they can't. They're people like you and me."

Fleming believed people signed up to Housing First because they had a conscience and wanted to help people.

She was proud the programme had been able to house 20 people since May and hoped to reach a target of 50 people by the end of the year.

"We've got a big job, but we believe we can end it [homelessness]."
