MetroNews had an exclusive interview with Green List MP Francisco Hernandez who was at the event.

Climate talks at COP30 in Belém, Brazil have been interrupted by a fire this morning NZ time. Green Party list MP Francisco Hernandez was at the event, and told Kōkako News that Kiwis were evacuated during their daily briefing, but were not at the end of the building where the fire was.

Local media reporting no casualties or burns but some first responders are receiving oxygen treatment after bringing the fire under control.

"There were a couple of fire wardens that came in and started evacuating us and that's how we knew. Eventually we were outside and we could smell the smoke then but apart from that we wouldn't have known that there was a fire."

A group chat with attendees has videos have been shared showing the blaze he says.

"So I saw a video up close and it look quite bigger up close compared to when I could just see the smoke outside. So you know that was probably actually scarier for the people closer to it."

Hernandez hopes negotiations will continue. He says "it is important to deal with the impact of climate change, so you know, it is really important that they continue as soon as possible and they come to a comprehensive and full agreement."

An update is expected shortly.
