Youth drivers licencing scheme announced

Oliver Cowan

A New Government scheme will help young people who get youth benefits or receive care get their drivers licence.

It is expected 2500 young people will get their restricted licence through the new scheme.

The Government knows access to a car, identification documents or the support of family members could be an issue for the youth.

"It gives them a chance to get practice and tuition in a safe and legal way," AA Driving School general manager Roger Venn said.

Over the past five years, young drivers who have never held a drivers licence were involved in 165 serious crashes.

"Having a drivers licence in the majority of careers is helpful, although it might not be necessary," Venn said.

The scheme will start in June, with over $5 million being invested from the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Ministry of Social Development.
