Two toilets and 100 car parks 'not enough'

New facilities for popular Lake Roto Kohatu Reserve may be insufficient, public feedback submission suggests.

The reserve, located off Sawyers Arms Road, has just five port-a-loos to service the thousands, who turn up on a sunny summer day.

A $1.2 million development has been proposed. It includes a car park expansion, toilet blocks with change and showering facilities, drainage lines and drinking fountains.

Public feedback and concept plans will be presented to the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board on Monday.

Colombo St Macpac manager Matika Sykes, who made one of 49 feedback submissions, was looking forward to the prospective improvements but said two toilet blocks and 100 parking spaces may prove insufficient.

"They'll probably realise that the volume of the people heading out there is increasing every year and they'll probably have to do more," she said.

Deputy Chairperson of the Fendalton Ward, David John Cartwright, said that "It's a significant amount of money, but an investment."

If approved by the Christchurch City Council, work is expected to commence in October, in time for the busy summer season.
