United States President Donald Trump says he will defend the southern border with the military.

President Donald Trump signed off on a bill last month for over $1.3 trillion in spending, which will last until the end of the year. It includes $1.6 billion funding for his wall along America's southern border.

Trump says its necessary because of President Obama's controversial 'catch and release' policy and threatened that Mexico will be forced to cooperate with a militarised border or face trade kickbacks in NAFTA.

President Trump has previously called the border a national security risk and suggested the funding for it come from the military.
