Detective Sergeant Craig Johnson said the Erawan Thai restaurant on the corner of Shirley and Hills Rd was robbed about 6.45pm on Wednesday.
The man was last seen running down Shirley Rd, heading east.
Johnson He said staff and diners in the restaurant escaped out a side door as the robbery was taking place.
Police have released CCTV images and are appealing to the public for information.
