Danish exchange student Hans Lubeck has planted the gift in the Papanui Bush regeneration area in memory of his year long stay in Christchurch.

Lubeck arrived in New Zealand about a year ago as part of the Rotary Youth exchange scheme and has been a student at Papanui High School.

He said he enjoyed the alternative subjects such as Outdoor Education and Drama. High school in Denmark was usually only for those students who want to progress to university and therefore had a very academic curriculum.

Lubeck highly recommended applying for an international exchange, although he said you needed to be willing to make changes and be open to different cultures to get the full benefit of spending a year in another country.

Papanui Rotarian Denis McMurtrie said more native trees would be gifted to exchange students in future to build an international connection to this suburban eco project.
