Papanui-Parallel cycle way makes intersection 'dangerous'

A Papanui resident is protesting against a new cycle way which he says restricts access along Grassmere street.

Murray Turley said the addition of the Papanui-Parallel cycle way on Grassmere St dangerously restricted vehicle access.

Turley said he saw a nine-metre truck get stuck turning into Grassmere St from Main North Rd, so had to act.

He and a friend parked a truck in the construction zone on Wednesday, which blocked work and shut it down.

Turley said he wanted the layout left as it was.

Papanui Community Board Member Pauline Cotter said Fulton Hogan had filmed a demonstration on Thursday of a work truck and a tandem trailer safely turning at the corner of Grassmere St and Main North Rd.

A Christchurch City Council spokesperson said Turley had been shown the footage. It was available for other concerned residents to watch.

Turley rejected Cotter's claims, saying the demonstration of the truck turning had been conducted on the corner of Proctor St and that he had never seen the footage.
