Staff were shaken after an armed robbery overnight at a Caltex petrol station on Main North Road.

A Caltex site worker, who did not want to be named, said the staff member, who was working at the time of the robbery, had gone home for the day.

The site worker also said many concerned members of the public had visited the station to express their sadness over the robbery.

The robbery took place about midnight when a group of five people entered service station armed with a crowbar and a tomahawk demanding cigarettes and cash.

They fled the scene shortly after, police said in a statement.

Police said they were following leads and were looking into the situation.

No one was injured in the robbery.

Police Inspector Peter Cooper said police were concerned about retail robberies after a spate of them in Christchurch. Police had offered fog cannons to businesses that were vulnerable to aggravated robbery.

CCTV images have since been released by police in an effort to identify those involved.
