New Zealand Sign Language week began on May 6.

New Zealand Sign Language is one of New Zealand's three official languages. New Zealand sign language week is a chance for New Zealanders to improve their signing skills and communicate with the deaf community.

Student Caleb Howell, 17, has grandparents who have been deaf his whole life. He said sign language had allowed him to communicate with them from a young age.

"New Zealand sign language was a great source of communication for when things such as lip reading wasn't possible," Howell said.

Turanga Library has taste tester classes available on Thursday May 9 from 12pm to 1pm.
