Eccleton is set to return to Cashmere High School after three years at Christ's College, where he is currently assistant principal.
"It was a great opportunity to broaden my own educational horizons," Eccleton said.
"I will miss the close-knit community, the staff, and the boys, but I am really looking forward to returning to a community that I know and understand."
Eccleton said being assistant principal was a "privileged platform to have a strong influence in the lives of our young people".
He is keen to push the educational boundaries at Cashmere.
School board chairman Geordie Hooft said Eccleton was "focused on ensuring the school is safe, caring and inclusive while challenging and encouraging all to strive for excellence".
