Lego lovers will have a permanent place to play at Christchurch's new central city library.

The council announced the popular Imagination Station in Cathedral Junction, would move to the new Turanga library in Cathedral Square.

The Imagination Station first opened in 2015 as a place for children to enjoy playing with lego.

Imagination Station Director, Sam Butcher, said the new location was "an exciting opportunity to expand operations."

Butcher said there was a time after the venue first opened when staff were not sure what the future would hold.

He was excited that the play centre had proved a success and received so much support from the public.

"People have made it clear that this is something they want long term," Butcher said.

The station offered Lego, Duplo, online games and after-school programs for kids, as well as a space to host birthday parties.

The Imagination Station would make the move from Cathedral Junction as part of the library's opening on October 12.
