23-year-old Troy Kevin Taylor has been found guilty of murdering 15 month old Ihaka Stokes in 2015.

After hearing from the Judge, the jury retired at 11.30 this morning to consider their verdicts.

The trial lasted eight days, during which evidence from 38 witnesses were heard at the High Court in Christchurch.

Troy Kevin Taylor has been found guilty of the murder of baby Ihaka.

Taylor denied murdering the toddler and claimed Mikayla Stokes, his partner at the time and the mother of Ihaka, caused the boy's death while Taylor was out getting a tattoo.

The little boy died after suffering 59 injuries and serious head trauma two years ago.

Throughout the trial, the defence argued Ihaka's mother Mikayla Stokes was responsible for the baby's death.

Crown prosecutor Mark Zarifeh said putting the blame on Stokes was a "desperate attempt" for Taylor to get himself out of trouble.

Sentencing details are yet to come.
